1903.
Tom Horn awaits execution for the murder of fourteen-year-old boy.
He writes this memoir.
Tom Horn was born in Missouri, in 1860. His parents, who were deeply religious, regularly beat him – on one occasion leaving him laid up in the family barn, where he needed a week to recover.
Their attempts to beat him into submission soon ended when aged just fourteen years old, he left home and headed West.
With $11 in his pocket after selling his rifle, and nothing to stay for after his beloved dog had been shot, young farm boy Tom Horn travelled through Kansas and reached Santa Fe in 1874.
Horn went on to become many things.
He was to become a pivotal figure in the cattle business, making a name for himself amid growing hostility between cattle barons and settlers as a government scout and interpreter for Generals Wilcox, Crook and Miles in the Apache wars.
He was assistant to the infamous Al Sieber, Chief of Scouts, and was known as the ‘King of Cowboys’.
He was a Pinkerton, a cowboy, a range detective and a gunman with potentially lethal ability – yet he was well respected and known as a gentleman who was true to his word.
In this account of his life, he recounts the shocking events that led to his imprisonment for the murder a fourteen year old boy.
It was a crime for which he was hanged in 1904, and many think he was wrongly accused.
Life of Tom Horn is a compelling western and a story of guilt, innocence and justice amongst the Apache Wars.
Tom Horn (1860-1903) was a US Army Scout, Pinkerton, cowboy, detective and assassin. He wrote his memoirs whilst in jail for a murder. His innocence is still debated.

I'm 75 years old and was lucky enough when I was a kid to have met a couple of old men that claimed to have known Tom Horn after he had moved to Wyoming. As near as I can recall, their stories were pretty much in line with what Horn wrote about himself with one major exception. These men claimed that Horn had a drinking problem,.... something he failed to mention in the book. The "old timers" that I knew felt that Tom Horn was hung for a crime he did NOT commit. One of these men told my father that he believed Horn was hung because the wealthy stock men that had hired him were afraid he might get drunk and implicate them in some of his other "less than legal activities".I especially enjoyed the first part of the book where Horn wrote about his life as a scout during the Apache Indian wars. Very informative with a lot of facts and details I had never read about before.
In any case, I found this to be a very interesting book, easy to read and very affordable on Kindle.

Life of Tom Horn Government Scout and Interpreter Tom Horn 9781535595476 Books Reviews
An autobiography of the life of Tom Horn. Very interesting story of how he acquired several languages. He set out on foot to walk from Missouri to California when he was quite young.
i decided to read this after watching his story on the History Channel. The majority of the book is written in Horn's own words and the language and story-telling style make it a fun read. His adventures are varied and interesting. He was not only an Indian scout, interpreter, Pinkerton detective, lawman etc.He was the true embodiment of the cowboy legend.
I read this book the first day, it's great. Another innocent man was hung in the early 1900's Mr. Tom Horn. I became interested in him after watching the movie with Steve McQueen, great movie too. This is my favorite book on the man supposed written by himself
I love any part of American history. The Life of Tom Horn shares his experience as a scout with the Army during the wars with the Apaches and specifically Geronimo that gives us a better understanding of what happened during those difficult years. He later tells about his own experiences leading up to his execution for a murder that I believe he did not commit. I enjoyed reading Tom Horn's life story even though it was at times somewhat tedious. I would still recommend this book to anyone interested in our Western history.
Makes me wish the Steve McQueen movie had reflected more on Horn's life as a scout. As baffling as Horn's conviction is with mystery and very little circumstantial evidence, it's story pales in comparison to his exploits as an Indian fighter and scout. His relationship to the Apache as both friend and enemy is very compelling. What this story lacks in literary polish, it makes up for with authentic depiction of a dying culture. This is a must read for anyone interested in the difficult conflict between progress and the interests of native Americans and their terminally pathological culture. The story could be a Shakespearian tragedy in grande proportion.
Amazing story.... A picture of how things were just 125 years ago in the West, as the Indian Wars were coming to an end.. Attitude and culture were dramatically different from today... Tom Horn was a scout, interpreter, tactician, evaluator of personalities, leader of me, and Writer.. He was , without a doubt, a genius..
Horn had an amazing memory and was a great storyteller....He could kill with out compunction when necessary and justified, both conditions being his call..... The book gives you a taste of the mix of fortitude and intellect that, for better or for worse, wrestled the frontier of America away from the Wild Ways, and into the 20th Century.
